FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES PRO-HOUSE OF CURROS ENRÍQUEZ TO CURROS ENRÍQUEZ´S FOUNDATION

On the occasion of the centenary of the writer´s birth on 15th, September, 1951, the City Hall of Celanova and a popular commission organize some acts in honour to Curros that include the inauguration of Luciano Asorey´s monument, as well as a session of the Real Academia Galega in which Joaquín Lorenzo and Ferro Couselo take the possession of their respective posts. As a possible result of the centenary, one year later, on 10th, December, 1952, the Board of Trustees Pro-House of Curros Enríquez appears with the main aim of “acquiring the house where Curros Enríquez was born” in the face of “giving it the best use: school, library, museum, etc…” as it is recorded in the statutes of the Foundation. For this, the society Unión Orensana appoints beneficiary of its property in Spain –as it is logical the familiar house of the poet- to Curros Enríquez Foundation.
This first Board of Trustees would be formed by the mayor of Celanova, at that moment Manuel Rodríguez Alonso who will exercise as the president, and also by José Fernández Gallego as vice-president, Costantino Añel González, as treasurer, and as chair persons: Daniel González Rodríguez and Clodomiro Rodríguez Fernández.
The political environment at that time was not the best one for a cultural enterprise of these characteristics and despite the commendable efforts of this group of persons and others that in the coming years joined to it with the aim of invigorating the acquisition project of the entire building and its later transformation into “school, library or museum”, the enterprise took a long time until it fell into oblivion. Despite these facts it was achieved the declaration of the house as “A Historical Monument of local interest”, in 1976 which guaranteed its value in the future as a public building.
In December, 1985, another group of people from Celanova, among them, Xosé Manuel del Caño, Xosé Benito Reza and Antonio Piñeiro, besides the writer from Vilanova, Xosé Luis Méndez Ferrín, proposed to the mayor, at that moment Adolfo Vázquez, the refoundation of the Board of Trustees with the aim of, again, taking up the transformation project of the house into Historical Museum.
A year before the director of the magazine “Follas Secas” was Xosé Manuel del Caño and he promoted the creation of the award “Celanova The Poets´ Home” prize. Afterwards it would be taken up by the Board of Trustees in order to turn it into the cultural act of reference of this organization.
The revitalization of the Board of Trustees generated the beginning of a long and complex process of negotiations with the owners and on 22nd, November, 1996 the sale of the remaining part was formalized in favour to the City Hall of Celanova held at that moment by Antonio Mouriño Villar, with Jesús Pérez Varela as the Minister of Culture.

The restoration work started when the almost 100 million pesetas that were needed for the restoration of the house were reached and when the project was drawn up in December, 1999.

Three years later, coinciding with the celebration of the 150 anniversary of the birth of the writer, between the 13th and 15th of September in 2001, the “I International Congress about Curros Enríquez and his time” took place. It was organized by the Consello da Cultura Galega and the City Hall of Celanova under the management of the teacher Xesús Alonso Montero in which more than 70 specialists participated and made a deep review of the work, life and influence of the poet in his generation. On 15th, September, 2001, the proper day of Curros´s anniversary the first public act took place in the house after its restoration.

With the living scene of Curros Enríquez´s family prepared to start the project of turning the house into a museum, the new times also demanded a renovation of the old Board of Trustees and a promotion of it, giving way to new institutions which could guarantee the future activity of the house and its financing, and including as president of honour to Manuel Curros Enríquez´s granddaughter: Manuela Curros Ortega.

All this leads to the fact that in May, 2004 appears a new Foundation named Curros Enríquez Foundation which takes the witness of the old Board of Trustees, already formed by an ample range of institutional, cultural and academic organizations such as the City Hall of Celanova, the county council of Orense, the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Education, the Board of Galician Culture, the Real Academia Gallega, the University of Vigo, Santiago and A Coruña as well as both Galician Cajas de Ahorros (Caixa Nova and Caixa Galicia) in order to guarantee its survival.
